Having a low-powered Linux-Server@home has some/many benefits. It can act as a Web/SSH-Server, or anything else you may imagine. The ALIX-Board from Swiss based company PCengines looked like a very promising platform for my implementation of a homeserver.

I´m currently working on my Homeserver. It´s already assembled, which was the easiest task. It consists of an Alix1d-Board and a corresponding case, with a Western Digital Scorpio Blue (WD3200BEVE) on top. It is the biggest 2.5″ IDE harddisk one can get.

I´m still not exactly shure about the purpose of this device, but for now I´m ripping my favourite Radiostation (FM4) with it. When I visit my friends, FM4 is often running in the background. More and more I realised it would be a great idea to save show like “Digital Confusion” for later listening – my Ubuntubox will do this for me.

This can be achieved easily by wgetting one of the Streams from the net (bash-scripting & cron are your friends). When I´ve developed a fully functional system, I will post more information here, as well as pictures (as soon as I´m back@office).

…to be continued…
